The Blacklist Debate
On its own, WebMarshal is an extremely effective content filter for web traffic. Out of the box WebMarshal is configured to block the sites and items most people would deem offensive.
The real beauty of WebMarshal is that you can have your acceptable use policy as open or as closed as you want. WebMarshal is also self learning - as you visit more websites WebMarshal automatically categorises visited URL's and adds them to its database.
Using WebMarshal you could for example at one extreme restrict access to ALL websites except the ones you specifically allow, on the other hand you could set WebMarshal to "listen" only mode, reporting on traffic but not actually restrict anything (except perhaps viruses).
However for some organisations - such as schools for example - it is unacceptable for ANY inappropriate content to be displayed. Such customer may prefer to have the added reassurance that all known offensive websites are categorised and effectively blocked, and that this list is updated daily..

To this end the Secure Computing SmartFilter Blacklist plugin is now available as an optional plugin component for WebMarshal.
As a key component of a layered security approach, SmartFilter enhances Web security by limiting and blocking access to sites which could expose users and their networks to malicious content. SmartFilter’s protection covers key areas from Spyware and Phishing to Resource Sharing and Malicious Sites.
